Triggering Historical Fiction

Not long after my grandmother died, I found that she had saved her letters and photos all the way back to1909. There was a photo of my grandmother as a young woman standing in front of a Model T on the arm of a young man who was not my grandfather. There was another photo of her strolling on a pier holding a parasolon the arm of yet another young man. These photos inspired my novel Eleanor Hill, which won the AAUW North Carolina Juvenile Literature Award in 2000. Right now I am working on a sequel to Eleanor Hill which was inspired by a 1930 photo of my mothers half-sister as a teen, holding my mother as an infant in her arms.

(For a presentation, I share how Ive combined primary sources (the letters and photos) with secondary sources (online and library resources) to write my novels. For a workshop, I ask the participants to bring a contemporary or historical photo and/or letters and we begin writing stories based on them. I have gotten positive response to this workshop with both young people and adults.)

Writing Hideaway

When I was about 12, I told a group of adults that I wanted to write a novel one day. They started laughing. I'll never forget how devastated I felt. I'd been writing stories since I was in first or second grade, but after that happened, I stopped writing for a long time.

Don't let that happen to you! If you want to write, you can do it. Whether your work is published or not, writing will always enrich your life. My novel "Princesses of Atlantis" is about two girls in middle school who write a book together. It's inspired by my own experiences writing with a friend.

Come to "The Writing Hideaway" for a writing workshop. Bring a friend, or meet others who want to write. We'll get started on some stories and I'll share some things I've learned about writing that I wish I'd known back when I was 12.

(The above has been a successful promotional piece for this workshop for 12-15 participants for both libraries and bookstores.)
